After rereading my last post.....I almost forgot to share one of the shots I worked on for Arthur Christmas. This shot is called TYD865. The sequence (Thousand yard dash) takes place at the very end of the film. This scene follows Arthur and Bryony (a gift wrapping elf) through the village of Trelew as they race against the sun rise to deliver a bicycle to a girl named Gwen. Arthur uses the bike to ride into the town, and Bryony stealthily wraps it as he rides. It was an amazing time working on this film, and all of my mentors and fellow interns were a great resource throughout the process. So without further adieu, here is TYD865.

It has really been a long time since I posted anything on my blog. I guess in some ways that is good, because I think it means that I am busy doing lots of stuff. I will try and share a few of the things that have been sucking up my time, but first I would like to give a big congratulations to all my fellow Sony interns and all of the Arthur Christmas crew at Imageworks for the Golden Globe nomination. Here is a picture that I found while I was flipping through animation magazine the other day. Nice job guys! It really means a lot to me that the first film I worked on is getting such worldwide acclaim.

In other news, Elijah Wood was on campus the other day. I attended his Q&A about acting and film. He talked about his work on Lord of the Rings, and Wilfred among many other things. He was really laid back, and a lot of fun to talk too. I got to meet him and I photobombed my hat right onto his head in this picture. He was totally into it and he said (and I quote)......."Oh, F*** yeah, dude!" I laughed, and here is the result.

I have been logging hours upon hours upon hours into my (thesis) short film. For anyone who does not already know, I am approaching the end of production on a two minute short animated film. It has been an amazing experience to make, and I have enjoyed every minute of it......for the most part. It is really rewarding to see it all come together, and I am excited to be able to share it with the world in a few months. I think the lighting is finally starting to come together, but since I cannot post any of the progress online (due to film festival restrictions), you will have to take my word for it. We recently had Dreamworks here to sit in on our lighting critiques. I was really happy with the outcome, and got some great feedback from the faculty and visiting artist. For the week leading up to critiques, we had late labs until 3 am. This picture was taken at about 2:45 AM . It is impressive how dedicated all the senior animators are here at Ringling. There are some great films in production, and I cannot wait to see how they all turn out.

A few weekends ago, I took a trip to the Sarasota big cat habitat sanctuary. It is a shelter for rescued lions, tigers, ligers, and other large beasts. It was so cool to see so many big cats up close. It is a happy place to be, because all the animals are safe, and healthy. Here is a picture of one of the giant white tigers. Clearly, he still enjoys his circus routine. It is almost unreal to see the scale of a tiger like that next to one of the puny little trainers.

I drew a bit with Sharon while I was there. I am trying to get back into keeping a sketchbook since I have been doing so much digital work lately. Here are a few of the drawings.

I have been taking an intermediate figure class this semester. I really love figure drawing but I have been feeling a bit rusty lately in the life drawing department. The first few weeks were pretty rough for me, as it has been almost two years since I have done any serious figure drawing. I almost forgot what to do with that little black stick of burnt twig that you press against the white slice of tree and drag around for a while. Anyway, I feel like the rust is finally starting to fall off a little. Here are a few drawings that I saw some life in.

Hopefully that was enjoyable to read/view. I will try to post more soon, but lets face it.....most likely I wont post again until after thesis. The next few months include thesis deadline April 1st, recruiting season, commencement, and more, so good luck catching a glimpse of me at any time during these months. Hope everyone is well. CTN EXPO

I took a few days off from thesis and flew out to sunny Burbank California for Creative Talent Networks (CTN) animation expo. Lots of other Ringling students and alumni were in attendance in addition to many industry legends. While I was in the area, I made sure to stop by Imageworks to visit. I rented a car along with my friends Ben and Jon and we drove to Culver city. We cried and hit the metal gates for a while until someone let us in out of pity (just kidding). Chad gave ben and Jon a tour, and talked about the cool stuff that goes on in the studio, then we proceeded to distract him from work as much as possible. I noticed he had a giant trophy in his office (yard sale souvenir I think). I decided to tape my business card on the cup at the top, and take pictures of him handing me the "intern of the year award".

We tried and succeeded in making awkward trophy reception faces. After we left Imageworks, we had lunch on the main lot, before we headed back to Burbank for the expo which started the next morning. Lots of amazing artists were in attendance. for example......

Got to see some people I knew from school visits. Here is Steve Hickner talking to a rabid bunch of students. He is saying something like "IF YOU DON"T WATCH FILMS, HOW CAN YOU MAKE FILMS?!!?!!?!!"

We also got to meet lots of the crew from Lion King, as there was a Lion King reunion panel on the last night. I got to meet some really talented and inspiring people like the directors (Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers), Supervising animators Andreas Deja, Ruben Aquino and Mark Henn in addition to art director Andy Gaskill and head of story, Brenda Chapman.

On the main expo floor, we got to watch Andreas Deja drawing characters like Scar, Jafar, Tigger, Mama Odie, Roger rabit and more.

I asked him if I could steal his mama Odie drawing. (I did)

Then we got a few Ringling people together to get a quick picture. He was really friendly and accommodating.

There were lots of demos going on The whole time. Here is Tony bankroft flipping through some of his drawings of Pumbaa from Lion King.

We also met Eric Goldberg (best known for his work on "Genie" in Aladdin, "Louis" the alligator in Princess and the Frog, and "Rabbit" in Winnie the Pooh.

The whole trip was just an incredible experience, and I gave out lots of business cards. I would definitely recommend CTN to any aspiring animator or illustrator who really wants to put a face to the name in this industry. I loved every second of it, and I will be anxiously awaiting next years expo!

I am working on this new logo for DFA. I am trying to make something sleek and futuristic. Not quite done yet, but this is the WIP. This was my first time seriously working in Adobe Illustrator, so I definitely stumbled through this one, but it was fun and I love the benefits of vector images.

Museum of Science and New Years

I went to boston with a few friends from my Israel trip, and we wandered around the museum of science for a while. It was really a fun day. Lots of walking in the arctic winds of Boston. One of the Exhibits at the museum was about M.C. Escher, which was pretty awesome. They had recreated some of his impossible shapes, and had some really cool optical illusions to look at. One of the coolest thing at the museum is this 2000 year old sequoia tree cross-section. You can look closely and see every single ring from every year the tree was growing. There are little lights going across the radius of the trunk that represent certain important dates in history. The light in the latter (blurry) picture is placed on the ring that represents the year that Leonardo Da Vinci painted The Last Supper, which I thought was awesome.

In other news, I had a pretty low key new year. I had the magical idea of starting a drawing in 2010 and finishing it in 2011 without picking the pen up from the paper. The results are as follows. I was slightly amused...

So here is the final page of character designs inspired by my doodles/textures/silhouettes... Overall I really liked working on this project....it was a lot of fun.

And since I was working in black and white....I decided to do a mindlessly colorful painting in photoshop for fun....too bad the colors are so much less saturated when I post it....picture it like it is....but this (insert wide hand gesture ) vibrant!!

Judaica show WIP and some caricatures

I have been working on this painting a bit here and there for a week or so.... It is going to be my submission for the Judaica show at Ringling. I am not really sure if I am done with it or not but it's is digital. Painted in photoshop. The portrait is of my Israeli friend, Hen, who traded me her I.D.F. (Israeli defense force) dogtags in exchange for a painting, and so the dogtags will be on display next to the piece as an installation in the show.

These characters were designed from silhouettes that I created using Corel Painter 11 and Adobe Photoshop CS5. The original silhouettes were just random strokes, so we had to turn them into some type of character during the revision process... it was a lot of fun to design these guys...

So over the summer I started sculpting a bust of Walt Disney. I worked on it a few times and got it to a pretty decent level of detail.....

Then I put it away for a few days (in moist plastic wrap)....... and it cracked......unfortunately.....but whatever.....it looks kinda cool.

Israel: A brief Summary

Warning.....this is an abridged version of the trip.....so I skip some big stuff....here goes! I got back from Israel on June 24th. All I can say is that the trip was absolutely beyond words. Our journey began at JFK airport in New York, where about 40 of us, travelers, met for the first time before our flight to Zurich, Switzerland and then another short (four hour) flight to Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv. When we got off the plane after what seemed to be a full day of traveling, we met a small group of 8 Israeli soldiers in the airport that toured with us throughout the duration of our Israel experience. The real trip started when we drove up north into the Golan Heights. Throughout the next 10 days of bus touring we proceeded to work our way south, visiting cities such as Tel Aviv, Haifa, Svat, and Jerusalem on our way. During this 10 day expedition, we did our fair share of hiking in such acclaimed destinations as the Golan Heights (near the Syrian border), Mt. Arbel, Masada, and even through the unrelenting heat of the Negev desert. One of the many extraordinarily staggering views that seems to be burned into my memory was "Bahai gardens" in Haifa, where we stood atop a series of terraces that seemed to recede down into the city of Haifa as far as the eye could see. The view from the top, overlooking the whole port of Haifa was unreal, and the atmosphere led the viewers eyes miles out into the horizon, where the city seemed to disappear into the mist. Soon after, we boarded the bus, and headed to Jerusalem. It was definitely a lesson in frugality to spend about 2 hours in the Israeli market place in Jerusalem, also known as "The Shuk", where all prices are negotiable, and the demeanor is more or less every man for himself. After leaving Jerusalem, we headed south. One of our stops along the way was Masada, a mountainous plateau riddled with ancient ruins from the first Jewish-Roman war. We woke up at 3 Am to start the hike up Masada, which consists of 700+ large stone steps carved into the bedrock that ascends to the city. One mis-step to your right would result in a nasty tumble down a jagged rocky slope, for hundreds of feet. Thankfully, everyone in our group who started the climb, made it to the top, and got to enjoy the spectacular view of the sunrise over the dead sea from the top. The echo from the top was loud and crystal clear; we could even distinguish specific peoples' voices echoing back. After we hiked down Masada, we made a quick pit stop in the pool at the hotel, then headed out to the dead sea, and then the Bedouin tents, where we ate delicious food, and rode camels into the sunset. After a short run-in with a spider-scorpion and an "Israeli desert scorpion", also known as a "deathstalker" or a "Palestine yellow scorpion", we were back on the bus headed back up north. On our final day, Shorashim (the trip organizer) took us deep into the heart of the old city of Jerusalem where we were so casually surrounded by the remnants of thousands of years of such important periods in Jewish and world history. The aura of this place was really something that cannot be explained. At this point, the organized trip was over, and many of my friends boarded a plane that night, and flew back home, however, a handful of us extended our trips and stayed longer. I remained in Israel for an additional 7 days with a friend from Ringling who many of you know (Uri Lotan...blog linked on the right side of my blog) after the trip finished. During those 7 days, I ate a lot of falafel, visited Tel Aviv and Jerusalem again, and traveled to a small Arab village called Abu Ghosh, near where my friend's (Scott Davis) buddy, Raz lives with his family. The next morning, we woke up early, and hitch-hiked into Jerusalem.......and got picked up by an elementary teacher driving a Jaguar. We then took a 4 hour bus ride to Eilat, where it was 115 degrees F, and it was basically too hot to do anything but walk around near the port. When we returned to Abu Ghosh, we went to a restaurant that claims to have the original "mother recipe" for hummus that has been passed down since hummus was invented. Now I am a natural born sceptic, but I just want to say......that hummus was ballin' outa control.....extremely delicious.....even served with falafel, pickles, olives, and a big stack of fresh baked pita. To say the least, I left Abu Ghosh content. On the last night, we drove to Tel Aviv, and met up with a few of the soldiers who were around and a few people who had also extended their trip. I flew home that night. I tried to pick a handful of pictures that would sum up my experience, so here are the pictures I chose......

So, as many of you know....I will be leaving for Israel on a 3 week trip this Sunday. I am participating in the Taglit Birthright program which sponsors Jewish Americans to travel on a one time free organized trip to Israel. I am really excited about the trip, and I am sure I will have a blast....I am going to be armed with a sketchbook, a micron, and my watercolors....so I am really looking forward to getting some cool drawings and paintings done as well as riding some camels and visiting some bedouin communities. I have already spoken to a few of you who are going to be in interesting places this summer, but for those who I have not talked to, I want to propose the idea of potential post card exchange. Quick Watercolor Painteroo

So.....I forgot to post this little painting too....it was a fun and quick little sketcheroo that I did while I was hangin out at the cafe in Barnes N Noble. Nothing too special, but I enjoyed it, so I thought I would post it.

This guy totally looked like his face was one of those fake disguise mask things....with the sunglasses, nose and mustache. Sorry about the terrible picture.....took it with my phone in tungsten lighting......Tried to color correct a bit in photoshop.....but it was to no avail.....but whatever...you get the idea.

So I went into Boston tonight with my friend, Scott to go to the Red Sox game. On the way to the game, it was pouring rain, and we were going about 25 MPH on Route 95 on the trip in. Bleh.... The weather cleared up, and we got into Boston with some time to spare. Made a quick trip over to the giant Blick store near Fenway, and bought a few pens.

The game started off with a bang, and the Sox scored in the first inning. Following that run, no more were scored. Although the game was not very exciting, I got a few drawings done.....of the outfielder of course, who was standing there bored as a highschooler...

The Red Sox got the "W"..... and we left the park in good spirits. So we walked back into brookline to my car, and found a nice parking ticket sitting on my winshield. Gahh!

Fixing Renderman Bump and Displacement artifacts

Hey guys, I just threw this tutorial together because a I know that a lot of Sophomores working on the cemetery were having some problems using renderman with their displacement and bump maps....One thing to keep in mind is that the project notes were written before the school started using renderman, so it is possible that certain parts of the notes may not be exactly what renderman wants. I know some people were getting black trace bias outlines, or just holes in your objects.....so take a look, hopefully it will help. Keep in mind it's my first tutorial, so it is prob not perfect, but whatever. Once again.....since it is youtube embedded, the size is a bit off, so you may have to watch it on youtube. Enjoy.

So Here are some stills from the cemetery project for my computer animation II class. We were provided the assets to the scene, and we had to completely texture and light the whole scene, in addition to arranging the scene compositionally. I enjoyed working on this project a lot and it was fun to be able to experiment with two different mood settings. I will most likely be following up this post with the video from the cemetery scene.

So today I had thanksgiving dinner with The Decker family, and it was a delicious home cooked meal that really hit the spot.

We went on a bike ride today through a wooded nature preserve, and there was a nice vista on the lake.

Simple Poly W.I.P. another update

Here is a little update on my simple poly project. I am currently animating a jump from one sphere (Earth) to a second (Moon). It proved to be frustrating at first, but once I got my workflow down, it got a lot easier to understand how to pose the character out. I still have quite a bit of animation, and texturing to do, but I am excited for the outcome of this project.

This is the project we are working on for computer animation. We are basically supposed to do an object with legs, and as you can see I chose a rocket ship. It still has a long way to go, and we are going to use it for assorted animation exercises including a walk, jump, and a weight shift.

The picture you are seeing is before any bump, specular, or diffuse maps. I will update with some more pictures of process soon.

So, for Computer animation class, the penguin project required us to recreate the linux penguin stress toy, as seen below. The whole idea of the project was to introduce polygon modeling, as well as simple texturing, lighting, bump mapping, etc. this is what mine turned out like. I am pretty happy with it.

Keep in mind, I found that picture on the internet. The penguins we had, were a lot more vibrant, so thats why the feet are more towards yellow as opposed to orange flavored.

So here goes the biggest post in I think forever. It is all stuff that I have done in the past 6 months, or year.

This group below are figures from FEWS. They are done in black pen, and some have accents in Copic marker. It was really nice to finally do some figure drawing for the first time in a while. I had not drawn full figure since first semester last year, which was about 11 months ago! Can't wait to get into that intermediate figure class that I am taking next semester. I am really excited about that class.

This painting was a quick micron, and watercolor that I did a few weeks ago. This scene is down at Indian beach near Ringling. It was really just to try out my new portable watercolor set that I made. It is made out of two altoids containers spliced together with baked sculpey inside that creates places to put paint. It folds up to a modest pocket sized metal tin container, and can be activated with a Niji water-brush. So much fun to use!

This digital painting was created for concept Developement class. It is the layout for a short animatic that we are doing. My animatic is about a tired hiker, and a hungry bear.

This figure below was drawn last spring. Over spring break, I did Glenn Vilppu's figure drawing "Heads, hands and feet" workshop. If anyone wants to get better at figure, this guy is the teacher to learn from. He is such a cool guy, and is an incredible teacher. Just his presence is really amazing.
